Striped Maple PENNSYLVANIA Long Rifle!
Here we present an antique John Israel Best Long Rifle, made circa the 1850s in Beaver Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Best was born circa 1832 and lived until 1880.
This rifle features a beautiful maple stock that goes all the way to the muzzle. Brass hardware throughout, with a large and ornately shaped and engraved patchbox. “WHITMORE, WOLFF & CO./PITTSBURGH” engraved lock. Double set triggers. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .45 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead. Decorated muzzle flat. Signed “J.I.Best” in flowing script on the top flat of the barrel. Well-performed period repairs on the wrist and at the toe of the butt stock.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore remains in great shape with nice rifling. Here is a Pennsylvania plains style rifle to collect and display!
