Description:
Model 1884 U.S. "Trapdoor" Rifle, 45-70 Govt. caliber, made between 1885-1890. The rifle barrel length of 32-5/8", blued finish with a case hardened breechblock and tang, and standard socket bayonet. Â Serial numbered in 300000 to 500000 range, with a total quantity of rifles approximately 200,000. Lock markings of Eagle and US/Springfield forward of hammer and breech-lock markings US/Model 1884. A feature of the Model 1884 is the Buffington rear sight; leaf style adjustable for windage and elevation, marked "R" on the side. Retains the standard two-piece trigger guard, with grooved / corrugated trigger.
My father purchased this rifle in the early 80's, I was with him, at a local gunshow. The overall condition and finish of the rifle is very good to excellent, with the exception of the wear marks on the buttpad and muzzle, from the socket bayonet, and slight nicks, on the barrel. The rifle exhibits the correct markings and proof marks, of the manufactured time period. The bayonet has a clean finish with the U.S. stamp and Rockwell test punch.
