Description:
This is an extremely interesting M1841 Whitney Mississippi Rifle/Carbine. The lock plate is dated 1849. The barrel has been period shortened to a carbine length of 28 3/4”. I have discussed this interesting with some fellow dealers and collectors and we believe this is a Confederate Altered example as it is believed no northern troops would have went through the trouble to repair the wrist or alter the barrel length. Given the desperate needs of the Confedracy followed by a breakdown of Whitney M1841s in southern arsenals that were seized at the beginning of the war, it is believed and attributed that this is a Confederate Altered Mississippi Rifle/Carbine. The wrist has a period repair that was done extremely well. The barrel and lock plate have a beautiful untouched patina. The brass parts also have a beautiful untouched appearance. This example shows a lot of period use. Mechanically the lock functions fine. Shipping is $67 fully insured.
