Description:
This is a very cool vintage custom 70-Series Colt Gold Cup made for silhouette target shooting or general pistol matches. It appears to have been customized by Clark in Louisiana but we do not know for certain. As you can see from the pictures, it remains in excellent condition inside and out and has a beautiful factory gloss-blue finish. It started life as a standard 70-series Gold Cup National Match 1911 manufactured by Colt in 1976 as thier top-of-the-line .45 ACP target 1911 pistol. At some point after leaving the factory this gun was totally worked over to be even more slick, reliable, and extremely accurate. The stock barrel was swapped out in favor of a hand-fit and polished extended 5.25" inch National Match barrel. The barrel was fitted in the slide witjh a Colt National Match solid barrel bushing. The slide was fit with a BO-MAR sight rail with an extended front sight blade and adjustable rear sight with a target-style square-notched serrated rear blade. This BO-MAR sight raised the sight plane up by more than .25" of an inch and extended the sight radius by 1.75" inches. The surfaces of the slide that make contact with the frame were hand polished to smooth out the action. The frame of this Colt was hand-stippled on the front strap around the factory checkered panel to increase grip traction, and the flat mainspring housing was swapped out for a checkered arched unit. The factory grip safety was swapped in favor of an extended beavertail grip safety, and the factory hammer was swapped out for a lightweight polished "Silva" hammer to speed up the lock time. The factory adjustable trigger was removed and hand-polished and hand-fit back into the gun to lower the pull weight and remove any felt grit or drag. The feed ramp was polished to a mirror shine, and the throat of the barrel was also polished slick. The factory original checkered Walnut grips with golden Colt Medallions were kept. The result of all of this customization is one of the slickest 1911's we have ever felt. When worked by hand the slide is so smooth it feels like it is on ball bearings and the barrel lock-up is perfect with no wiggle. The two-stage trigger breaks like a glass rod with a very light pull. All of the controls on this custom Colt are in perfect working order, including the adjustable rear sight and safety. This custom Gold Cup should function flawlessly, and we have no doubt it is supremely accurate. These 1970's vintage Gold Cups are far surperior to the modern production guns in almost every category, certainly in fit and finish. If you have been looking for a new pistol to take to the range to beat your shooting buddies with, this vintage custom Colt Gold Cup would be a perfect choice. It is truly a classy pistol that should prove to be an excellent investment as well as a pleasure to shoot.
