1894 .32-40 SPECIAL ORDER RIFLE WITH ROUND BARREL AND HALF MAGAZINE, #172XXX, MADE 1903. As I've written before on this subject (see the 1894 .38-55 listed below), it is interesting to note that many knowledgeable riflemen of the day ordered their Winchester rifles with half magazines as they were generally more accurate than those with full magazines. With a full magazine hanging on the bottom the barrel, each time a fresh cartridge was levered into the action, harmonics or vibrations of the barrel were altered by the changing distribution of cartridges and weight of the mag tube. This had an effect on accuracy. Interesting to note that Theodore Roosevelt always ordered his deluxe Winchesters with a half magazine- and he knew something about rifle shooting! This example shows good thinning blue on the receiver sides and bolt that is about half blue and half mixing gray/brown. Fine aged/thinning barrel blue. Generally fine+ to excellent stock and forend with tight wood to metal fit and some nice blue on the forend cap. Fitted with a Marbles heavy buckhorn rear sight with Lyman blade/bead front sight. Bore is fairly bright with fine rifling throughout and showing only light wear. Tight action, half cock is strong and secure. The rarest caliber in the Model 1894. Very nice appearance.
