Description:
Exceedingly difficult to find configuration and caliber. Transition era Winchester Model 70 in the highly desirable and scarce .22 Hornet caliber. S/N 78*** with matching scribed bolt made in 1948. Bore and mechanics are good. I have personally verified that the chamber remains 22 Hornet and has not been reamed to a "K Hornet" nor any other caliber. All internal components are factory correct. Condition is quite nice at about 96-97% original finishes overall with only light handling marks. This is a nice dark stock with an attractive grain pattern. There are no noteworthy dents, gouges or cracks anywhere. The rifle is set up with a correct period Lyman 48 WJS receiver sight and there is a filler plug in the rear sight boss dovetail. This is the correct Lyman 48 style introduced in 1947 with the scalloped base which did not require a notch to be cut in stock, but as usual, there is a slight horizontal impression and an elevation screw bore hole underneath the sight, so would require a repair in that area should the sight ever be exchanged. Not perfect, but a very nice example that does not come along too often.
