Description:
“THE YANKEE GUNSMITH” Antique A.B. FAIRBANKS Metal PERCUSSION Pocket Pistol

Rare Pocket Pistol from Boston, Massachusetts!

Here we present an antique A. B. Fairbanks All Metal Percussion Pocket Pistol made in Boston, Massachusetts between 1838 and 1841. Rare. Aaron Bliss Fairbanks (1804-1841), self-designated as “The Yankee Gunsmith” was part of a cohort of young gun makers who were born around 1805, meaning they would have completed their apprenticeships and reached maturity around 1825-26, just as percussion caps were being introduced into the market. We know from old ads that Fairbanks made or sold traditional rifles, fowlers, and “training guns” (presumably used by members of the militia for drill and training). His address was listed at No. 2, Exchange Street and “OPPOSITE the Sign of the Golden Gun”. We also know he made at least three other types of weapons: cane guns, single shot pistols with cast brass frames, and cast iron and steel rifles and shotguns.

This odd pistol has a one-piece cast brass frame, handle, an iron barrel and lock system and chambered for .33 caliber and utilizes a percussion ignition system. The hammer lacks much in the way of a neck or spur and the trigger stows inside a pocket in the bottom of the frame until the hammer is cocked, very similar to contemporary British designs. The inside of the case lid is stamped “A.B. FAIRBANKS/SEP. 5 1825/BOSTON MASS./NO. 8” (this last number corresponds to the number on the pistol). The case is a very nice, old but probably later creation that includes a cap tin with caps, bullet mold, a few bullets, cleaning rod, case key and a flask.

The overall condition is very good. The action is functional. The bore is in good condition. A very nice little set that would display well in an office or study!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3 inches.

Caliber: .33 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
