Description:
Earliest HENRY DERINGER Belt Pistol .40 Caliber Antique c1825 PHILADELPHIA

Considered the Earliest Iteration of the Deringer Pistol!

Here we present an antique Deringer Percussion Pistol, made the 1820s. Henry Deringer was a very successful Pennsylvanian gunsmith who started his own company in his early twenties, circa 1809. It was not until the 1850s that his prototypical “Deringer” percussion pistol became extremely popular.

This example is one of the earliest known designs and is very rare, thus highly sought after. It bears great resemblance to what would be the more recognizable Deringer pistol, the very small “peanut” sized version. Commonalities include the ovate barrel profile (flat and narrow on top with a round egg-shaped cross section) with the approximately .40 caliber bore. Both styles tended toward aesthetic “extras” that included engraving, and silver or German silver hardware—this one features an engraved lock and silver thumb plate, fore end, and ramrod tip. Differences include overall size: this one is large enough to wear on or in a belt. The lock is of the more common bar-style rather than the later “back-action” style. The stock has the “bag-shaped” grip rather than the later “bird’s head”.

The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore is in good condition, dark with strong rifling. The lock reads “DERINGER/PHILADA”. “BSS” is hand engraved on the escutcheon just behind the breech. The stock shows lots of use yet remains solid. There is a nicely blended graft along the barrel on the right side.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-5/8 inches.

Caliber: .40

Overall condition as seen in photos.
