The sword is a marvelous example of craftsmanship. Handle is made of Nickel silver and shows a beautiful patina. The blade displays a beautiful graying and typical floral patterns and a bold U.S. Imported by Tiffany of New York” This 1864 presentation sword features a US motif etched on blade, a brass scabbard, brass hand guard, silver hilt, and a firing cannons motif on the reverse side of the blade. It is in fantastic used condition. The presentation sword is a fantastic piece of Civil War History. The sword is a marvelous example of engraving with typical floral patterns and a bold U.S. on one side of the blade and firing cannons on the reverse. The handle of the sword is made of Nickel silver and shows a beautiful patina. It was imported by Tiffany of New York and is marked as such towards the ricasso. (see photos). It was presented to Major Anthony Johnson Allaire in 1864 for gallant service in the 133rd New York Infantry.Handle is made of Nickel silver and shows a beautiful patina. The brass scabbard is engraved with the dedication 'Major Anthony Johnson Allaire 133 New York Infantry 1864 Gallant Service'. Though Anthony Johnson Allaire's residence is not listed, it's suggested that he was originally from Cincinnati, OH before living in New York City where he was a serving as a drillmaster on Riker's Island in the New York City police department at the outbreak of the Civil War. At 33 years old he enlisted on 8/12/1862 at New York City and assigned to the 133rd. He was one of the first men to volunteer his services to the Union Army. He and his men were organized into Company E and he was elected captain and first commander of his company.Allaire saw action in several battles including Port Hudson, Marksville Plains, Fort Bisland, Cross Roads and Vermillion. He was possibly known best for his role as he was placed in charge of guarding the Union pay train carrying $3 million for special pay General Sheridan's troops against the Confederates.Allaire mustered out June 6, 1865.
