Description:
RARE GEM 1850s Antique SHARPS Pistol-Rifle Falling Block Action Carbine .38

1 of Only 600 C. Sharps & Co. Pistol-Rifles Ever Made!

Here we present an antique Sharps Falling Block Pistol-Rifle in .38 Caliber, made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania circa the 1850s. Sharps only manufactured approximately 600 of these unusual “pistol-rifles” or what we might call and pistol carbine today using the same action as the Sharps Breech-Loading Single Shot Pistol. The trigger guard acts as the lever for the falling block action. When dropped, the breech end of the barrel opens to give access to the chamber, where a paper cartridge may be loaded. Breech-loading firearms technology was really ramping up during this period and Christian Sharps’ designs, concepts and patents were hugely influential prior to, during, and after the American Civil War. His rifles and carbines were prominent in the Abolition Movement in the Antebellum period, and the Union would use them to great effect, especially in the cavalry. After the war, Sharps rifles and carbines would become virtually synonymous with buffalo guns and would be found in the saddle scabbard of soldier, cowboy, lawman, hunter, and Indian fighter alike.

The receiver lever and hammer have a casehardened finish. The rifle has a walnut forend and pistol grip stock. This one is numbered "326" and is stamped on the inside of the patch box and on the breech. "C. SHARPS & CO'S/PHILA. PA" is roll-stamped on the left side of the receiver. Pistol-Rifles were produced in very small numbers, thus being quite scarce. This is a rare chance to fill a niche in a Sharps collection or simply to own one of the rarest of all Sharps’ firearms.

The overall condition is Fine. The action is strong and crisp. The bore is bright with nice rifling. The markings are clear and easy to read. An extraordinary piece that will only become more and more difficult to find, but we have one here!
