Description:
CIVIL WAR DATED & SIGNED Antique M1803 Musket

Adapted for Use during the American Civil War

Here we present a U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1803 Flintlock Musket, manufactured in 1819 in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. While the Harpers Ferry Model 1795 became America’s first smoothbore, the Model 1803 became the country’s first standardized rifle design. Production spanned from 1803 through 1819 with a total of 19,726 units produced. Many of the Model 1803 saw combat service in the War of 1812 and stood the test of time when it was featured once again in the Mexican-American War. Some even remained in play at the beginning of the American Civil War, when just about any firearm was placed into service due to shortages on both sides. Though it was never confirmed, and sources are in disagreement, many believed that the M1803 was featured in the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804 through 1806.

This one is a particularly interesting example in that the barrel was bored to a larger caliber, about .67 inches (to shoot about a .65-.66 caliber projectile). The bore is a bit off center and certainly of a crude nature. It is very likely that this modification was performed by the Confederacy in one of the many small shops that served as the armorers for the South, known for the crude nature of their work. The top of the barrel is marked “DANIEL SNIDER / 1861”. This is an unusual personalization of a musket. It is also interesting to point out that the letter “E” is reversed in both first and last names of the inscription and each character used a separate stamp. There were two Daniel Sniders to have enlisted in 1861: one Confederate and one Union. Daniel Snider of Haywood County, North Carolina would be the more likely of the two, as the other (of Wirt County, WV) would not enlist until mid-November of 1861. Private Snider mustered into L Company of the NC 16th Infantry on May 4, 1861, just weeks before Virginia Militia units would seize and loot Harpers Ferry Armory of all serviceable arms, parts and machinery and take them further South. He and his regiment fought at Frazier’s Farm, during which he was shot in the chest. He laid on the field for 3 days until found and rescued by Matthew Love, for whom he would name one of his sons. He would later go on to fight with the 69th Regiment “Thomas Legion”. The lock on this musket is still marked with the original “US” shield on the “Eagle” / HARPERS FERRY / 1819” that it received upon leaving Harpers Ferry Armory at the beginning of its service life. It shows signs of having been converted to percussion but reconverted back to flintlock. There are still visible government inspector markings on the left flat of the stock, the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard, and the left side of the barrel.

The overall condition is good. The iron parts are gray. The markings are legible. The walnut stock remains solid and stable, despite some cracks from use and weathering throughout. The bore is smooth with some visible tool marks and gray surfaces. The action is functional. There is no half-cock. Here is a fascinating example of a scarce Harpers Ferry Model 1803!
