INDIAN WARS Antique SPRINGFIELD Model 1879 Breech Loading TRAPDOOR CARBINE

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1881 by Springfield Armory. After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. The Allin trapdoor conversion for muskets was chosen and soon after these heavy-hitting, single shot rifles were being built from the ground up. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s. That was, until the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.
The overall condition is very good. In spite of the obviously heavily used and weathered stock, the steel parts show their markings and a blued finish has turned gray with age. The action is strong. The bore is in great shape with nice rifling. The stock remains solid and in addition to the weather has some spots that appear to have been carved into by one of the original users. The butt plate tang is marked “US”. This one contains a 3-piece cleaning rod in the butt trap. This one looks like it has been there and done that and is still ready to go if duty calls. If only it could talk!
