Description:
Serial #10250, .50-95 WCF, 26" barrel with a good, bright, lightly pitted bore. This is an 1880-made, 2nd Model rifle with “WINCHESTER EXPRESS / .50 CAL. 95 GRS." engraved on the sliding dust cover. The barrel and magazine tube have traces of original blue remaining on protected areas, with the balance having a mottled gray-brown patina that is fairly uniform across the barrel, tube, and frame. The loading gate has some visible traces of original fire blue remaining, and the brass lifter has a dull yellow-ochre patina. The barrel has the flip-up ladder sight, and a semi-circular front blade with ivory bead in the front dovetail. The walnut forend and buttstock are in very good condition with wear and handling marks throughout. The forend has a large bruise on the right side just behind the forend cap, and the buttstock has a thicker, added varnish. The action is sound, and fully functional. These imposing rifles were built for handling big and dangerous game, and were one of the few lever action guns popular with British hunters who used them in Africa and India. This example is in good-very good condition, possibly a great candidate for restoration, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Antique
