Description:
This Smith & Wesson Pre-WW2 Registered Magnum was shipped from the S&W factory to Sutcliffe Hardware in Louisville, KY on May 6, 1937 as part of a 3-gun shipment. Each gun had a different configuration. This exact gun was then purchased by a federal agent for the Department of the Treasury, Bureau of Narcotics, which would eventually evolve into what is now known as the DEA. This agent, S.A. "Sid" Lovelace used this gun as his duty weapon. As such, it does have some holster wear, as can be seen in the pictures.

This gun was originally shipped in this configuration with one exception: the Magna-style grips were switched by Agent Lovelace to service-style grips with an N-frame grip adapter, which are contemporary of the time. He registered his Magnum with Smith & Wesson, and the original registration certificate and its mailing tube (with a postmark of May 18, 1937) are included with this gun. Also included are the original sight adjustment tool, barrel brushes, and a partial box (12 rounds) of Western Super-X .357 Magnum, 158 Grain, Metal-Piercing rounds that he preferred to use against motorized vehicles.

Lastly, a letter dated September 25, 1940 from Lexington KY Chief of Police Austin B. Price is included. It is addressed to Mr. McMillon of the Lexington City Jail and it authorized Agent Lovelace and his fellow agents to use the Police Target Range for the purpose of firearms qualification.

This is a true Federal Law Enforcement Agent-Registered Magnum that was carried during the execution of said agent's duties fighting drug trafficking in the 1930's all the way through the 1950's.
