Description:
UNION CAPTAIN ANDREW POTTER Colt Model 1849 Revolver Antique CIVIL WAR MASS

Captain of Potter’s Company, 34th Massachusetts!

Here we present an Antique Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver Inscribed to Captain (later Colonel) A. F. Potter, made in 1853 in Hartford, Connecticut.
This revolver includes a "Statement of Military Service of Andrew Potter"  that was transcribed to a librarian at the Virginia State Library in Richmond, Virginia on May 6, 1929 by the authority of the Secretary of War, Major General C.H. Bridges, briefly summarizing his Civil War service in the 34th Massachusetts Infantry noting he started as the captain of "Potters Company" (B Co.) and finished as a lieutenant colonel/brevet colonel of volunteers and also served as Provost Marshall of Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in 1864. The letter gives a nice detail of his life in the Union Army from his time of induction as a Captain on August 6, 1862, including being wounded in battle in Piedmont, Virginia on June 5, 1864 that kept him out of action until August 30 of the same year, to his honorable discharge on June 15, 1865. It also states that Porter was at the Appomattox Courthouse at the time of Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865.

Not mentioned in the letter is the fact that Captain Potter commanded the 34th Mass at the Battle of Cedar Creek on 19 October 1864, in which the Union counterattack broke Confederate General Jubal Early’s forces and ended the invasion into the Union. Identifiable guns from this period are scarce, much more so when dealing with any officer of some note.

The back strap of this revolver is inscribed “A. F. POTTER”. Ivory grips. There is a photograph of the Colonel which has written on the back “Grandfather in the War” and “Grandpa Potter”.

The overall condition is good. The action is strong. The bore is in good condition with nice rifling. The ivory grips are solid and remain in great shape. All the numbers match. This revolver comes in a fitted case with a black leatherette covering and accoutrements inside. All in very good shape.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 6 inches.

Caliber: .31

Overall condition as seen in photos.
