JOHNSON US Contract Model 1816 TYPE 3 Conversion MUSKET 1 of 600 Produced; CIVIL WAR Conversion to Percussion Here we present an antique R. & J.D. Johnson US Contract Model 1816 Musket, manufactured by R. & J.D. Johnson in Middletown, Connecticut in 1832. This musket was originally manufactured with a flintlock and was converted to the percussion firing system in the period leading up to or during the American Civil War. It was also cut down to carbine or musketoon length during the period of use, probably to make it handier while on a horse. This large, smooth bore musket was still getting the job done 30 years after its manufacture. The Model 1816 US Flintlock Musket was made at both the Springfield Armory (325,000) and the Harper’s Ferry Armory (350,000). Additionally, more than a dozen contractors also made the Model 1816 Muskets during its production years, with R. & J.D. Johnson being one of them. Though these contractors added up to 146,000 muskets, Johnson was only responsible for 600 of them after the U.S. government signed a contract with them in 1828 and 1829. In fact, there was only one other manufacturer that made less than R. & J. D. Johnson. There were three different styles of the M1816 that were developed. Though information shows that Johnson produced Type III rifles, this one is dated 1832, making it one of the first produced. With only 600 total produced, this is a very rare contract U.S. martial musket! The cartouche on the left stock appears to read “LG”, for Lewis Ghriskey. “JN” is hand carved onto the left stock. “US” is stamped onto the top of the buttplate tang. The lock reads “1832/MIDDn CONN”. “b – M” is marked on the right wrist. The overall condition is good. The action is strong and tight. The bore is smooth and remains in good condition. The stock is solid and hearty. Here is a US M1816 musket to collect and display! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30-1/2 inches.
