Description:
SOLD   A Germanic Wheel Lock pistol, with a 15 1/4" round engraved barrel with straight rifling.
The Wheel lock firearm was developed in mainland Europe in the 16th Century. Although the German provinces
made these weapons famous, they were very common throughout the continent up to the mid 1600's.
It was the invention of the wheel lock assembly, which made the development of the pistol possible.
Although these arms were very elegant and in some cases extremely ornate, they were very expensive to
produce and had a rather high mainenance mechanism. They were not practical for large armies but proved
very popular for private hunting arms of the upper classes. In warfare, these guns were used by the upper class cavalry and officers.
These guns were used along side matchlock muskets but were soon replaced by Snaphaunce lock arms. This one is more modern made and looks complete with it's wrench. The lock spring turns, and I can here it but doesn't lock so it may have come loose or possibly broke. These were llike a watch or clock spring, wound up , hammer cocked forward. When the trigger is pressed the hammer is manually pushed forward into the pan where a grated steel wheel spins and the hammer holds a pyrite stone that makes sparks to ignite the charge. A brass butt-cap and trigger guard and the remainder of trim is steel/ The top of the barrel has engraving and a possible deep proof , but not sure if this is a shooting model . The smoth bore barrel is thick and the lock side plate has Fleur-di- leah of France. Measures about almost 25"long, The opposite lock side has a ring for a lanyard. Comes with a steel ram-rod also. Check my inventory of rare grips, unusual gun parts, barrels and holsters.
