Description:
Elaborate exhibition quality. Gun has 28 inch half octagon barrel marked 40-70 caliber on the muzzle. Windage adjustable spirit level front sight, typical Peabody folding ladder rear sight and windage adjustable tang sight marked with the serial number. Less than about 850 of these were ever manufactured. A fairly scarce gun and to find one in this condition is very unusual. This is just a great gun. Deluxe checkered straight stock wood is in excellent condition with a rifle style buttplate. Retains most original finish with just some minor wear. Receiver is very elaborately engraved. I believe it to be the work of John Ulrich as it is his pattern. On a Winchester it would be pattern #4 on one side being a woodland game scene. On the other side is the scene referred to as Monarch of the Glenn which is an elk standing on a mountain. Gun has a considerable amount of case hardening remaining on the receiver. On top of the receiver is the name "John Ormsby". I have heard the name before. This is a great gun.
