SIGNED, INLAID, and ENGRAVED Plains Rifle
Here we present an antique Martin Prillaman Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Clay County, Ohio. Prillaman was born in 1824 to his father from Virginia and his mother from Ohio. He died in 1888 at the age of 64. The only profession listed for Prillaman, though sometimes spelled Prilleman, was that of a gunsmith and known for making “squirrel” guns, along with larger calibers for bigger game. This rifle’s octagonal barrel is in .38 caliber, small enough to hunt squirrels yet large enough to take medium size game. And, when not out hunting game, it’s there to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression.
The top of the barrel is signed “M Prillaman” and “MP” is hand engraved on the sideplate. Octagonal barrel, double set triggers, lots of hand-wrought German silver décor, including an eagle within an oval, an owl, and a uniquely shaped patchbox.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong, and the bore is good. The stock is solid with a thin, stable crack on the left side. A very attractive rifle from what was then the American Western Frontier!
