Ohio Squirrel Rifle from the 1850s!
Here we present an antique Jacob D. Shrock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Goshen, Indiana. Shrock, sometimes spelled Schrock, was born in 1823 in Holmes County, Ohio and migrated to Indiana in 1847. He started his gunmaking business around 1852 and continued until 1890. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .36 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression.
This rifle features a 34-1/4 inch octagonal barrel and a beautiful striped maple stock. The top of the barrel is marked “J.D. SHROCK”. It is equipped with a back action lock and double set triggers. The stock is inset with an understated yet handsome brass patchbox with a stag cast into the back of it.
The overall condition is good. The action is strong, and the bore is in good shape. There are a few cracks around the lock and side plate causing there to be movement around the breech and barrel. Here is a very nice rifle for display above the mantle.
