Description:
A very good NEEDHAM & CO., LONDON double barrel 16 bore percussion sporting gun that is ready for the field. This lovely little sporting gun has had some work done over the years but it is, after all, more than 170 years old. The 30" damascus barrels are finished with an old rebrown exhibiting strong damascus pattern and strong color. The still deep and clearly legible top rib engraving may be just a touch soft but it takes an experienced eye to discern it. Most importantly, these handsome damascus barrels have fine bores just like you want, making them safe and a pleasure to load and clean. The perfectly functioning island locks - I love the look and extra effort these island locks require - are border, scroll, and game scene engraved with a charming pair of grouse on the right lock plate and pheasant on the left lock plate. They locks have been polished bright at some point long ago but they have dulled nicely. The internals are superb - very clean throughout, rare and fantastic five screw bridals, springs as strong as when they left the bench, and serial numbered. The walnut stock features good figure, sharp checkering and a great finish, no doubt freshened at some point. Extra features on this London gem include platinum pillow blocks to protect the forearm wood from the sharp edges of the barrel breeches when putting it together and platinum blow out plugs too. The iron furniture has been reblued and not quite as well as my eye would like. This work is particularly evident from the butt plate tang where the engraving is noticeably soft. Nevertheless, the gun has quite an appealing appearance. Mechanically it is perfect and ready for use. The maker, William Needham, was no ordinary London gunmaker; he was quite inventive and respected. He built the first commercial hammerless gun - a needle-fire in 1852 - and the first successful ejector gun. No less than the venerable W.W. Greener thought well enough of Needham's work to acquire the business in 1874 and to continue to sell guns under the Needham name thereafter. William Needham did business under the name Needham & Co. at 26 Piccadilly, the address engraved on the top rib near the breech of this gun, between 1844 and 1849, enabling us to positively date the gun to that period. Here's a chance to own a great little English double barrel 16 bore percussion sporting gun by a great London maker at a very reasonable price. Indeed, you couldn't even have just one of the superb locks of this gun made for the price. This London gem represents a great value for the hunter, shooter or collector.
