Description:

RARE Civil War ALLEN & WHEELOCK Center Hammer ARMY

1 of 700 Revolvers Made In 1861 and 1862

Here we present an antique Allen & Wheelock Center Hammer Army Percussion Revolver, made in 1861 in Worcester, Massachusetts, at the start of the American Civil War. Allen & Wheelock manufactured approximately 700 Center Hammer Army revolvers. Of these 700, the Ordnance Department purchased 536 of these revolvers in 1861. Surviving examples are rare. The single action revolver has a six-shot cylinder solid frame and unique rack and pinion loading lever in which the forward portion of the trigger guard serves as the operating lever. The two-piece walnut grips have a high polish varnish finish. A fine 'custom' nickel Army with extensive engraving by Gustav Young and hand-carved ivory grips is thought to have been the personal weapon of Ethan Allen.

The left side of the part/round, part/octagon barrel is stamped with the legend "ALLEN & WHEELOCK. WORCHESTER. MASS. U.S./ALLEN'S PT'S. JAN.13.DEC.15.1857.SEPT.7.1858.". The serial number "57" is stamped on the inside of the trigger guard and on the rear face of the cylinder. The revolver has no Ordnance inspection or U.S. property marks which indicates that it is one of the approximately 160 Center Hammer Army revolvers manufactured for commercial sale.

The overall condition is fine. The nickel finish is 90%. The markings are clear. The walnut grips are in great shape. The bore is in very good condition, clean with good rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a very RARE and attractive revolver from one of the 19th Century’s most prolific makers!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7 1/2 inch part octagon.
