GERMANIC Antique J.H. BACKER of BLIESHEIM SxS SHOTGUN King Wilhelm II
ENGRAVED, CARVED DRAGON, GERMAN SILVER!
Here we present an Antique J.H. Backer German Percussion Side by Side Double Barrel Shotgun, made sometime in the mid-19th Century. This double barrel hammer gun would have been used for putting game on the table and protecting the homestead. This is a Germanic fowling piece that is elegant in its simplicity and practicality. It is a nice size and would have been a delight to carry afield in the hand or slung over the shoulder.
Atop the barrel rib, “JH BACKER IN BLIESHEIM” can be read, inlaid with silver. This fantastic double comes with sling swivels and lots of engraved German silver décor. The left cheekpiece has an inlaid silver zwei mark silver (.900) coin displaying the bust of King Wilhelm II on the obverse and the eagle on the reverse. On the underside of the buttstock, an ornately carved dragon takes center stage. The octagonal, twist barrels make this shotgun unique.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and tight. The bores are in good condition and remain smooth. The last owner did shoot this functional work of art!
