OHIO MADE Mid-1800s Percussion Plains Rifle
Here we present an antique Nehemiah Barnhart Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century. Barnhart was born in 1831 and started his gunmaking career at an early age. He took his family and journeyed to Columbus, Nebraska to open a shop only to find another smith firmly established there. He returned to Ohio and opened a shop at Hallsville, in Ross County, where he remained active until his death in 1888.
This rifle represents the quintessential pioneer rifle. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .42 caliber, large enough to take small and medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression.
The overall condition is good. The action functional. The bore is in good shape. There is surface pitting throughout the barrel in various locations. Weighing in at 13 lbs., this rifle would have been a solid and reliable choice for the owner at the time.
