Description:
Antique Ornate European Flintlock Holster Pistol, Possibly of French Mfg., approx. .56 cal., 10-1/2” 2-stage round-to-octagonal barrel is cannon turned at its mid-point and made without sights; lockplate has a fire-spewing dragon head or serpent like creature engraved at rear and mid-point, and “MAZAD / LAYNE or (IAYNE)” and possibly “ATVDE OR (ATVLE)” engraved ahead of hammer; brass furniture including triggerguard with long rear and pineapple-style front tangs, large oval butt having elongated side tangs and a grotesque mask cap, fancy sideplate (original, but likely not to this pistol), 2 fluted ferrules retaining the horn-tipped hardwood ramrod, which is a later replacement; lovely walnut fullstock having raised-carved aprons at lock, sideplate, rear barrel tang, ramrod channel, and along both sides of the barrel.

Condition is good.  The iron parts are medium gunmetal gray with scattered light pitting and darkening as probably originally left in-the-white, with mostly clear markings and engraving; the brass with an aged patina and light dings (right buttcap tang is cracked through, as is upper-rear portion, with dents at left butt); the stock is sound and complete, with a 3/4” crack at right butt and another between lower ramrod ferrule and front triggerguard tang, showing wear commensurate with its age and long period of use but with very nice carvings, a few minor losses to the thin edges, and pieces missing to the carved areas below the lock.  Action functions well.
