(Renville County Pistol and Rifle, Blue Earth County Pistol and Rifle, and Sibley County Shotgun) Included with this is a copy of the original purchase documents from A&A Engraving and others documents. From the description provided by A&A Engraving: The art selection for the Renville County rifle was interesting and challenging, partly because of the Dakota Conflict of 1862, as well as many events that changed the borders, county seat, etc. To tell you just a little about our projects, A&A Engraving produces ten numbered rifles, one of ten, two of ten, etc. and an Artist's Proof in any given county ONCE in a lifetime. We depict the historic events, landmarks, industry, agriculture and wildlife of the area. Renville County was declared fullyanized by an act of the Minnesota Legislature on March 1, 1866. The County is named after Joseph Renville, a French Canadian explorer, government interpreter, and scout who operated a trading post. He was a leader of white men and Indians, and has been compared to Daniel Boone of Kentucky. In viewing the left fore-end of the rifle, You will see Beaver Falls, a ghost town today. Beaver Falls was the first county seat of Renville County. The courthouse up on the bluff overlooks the village. Beaver Falls boasted a population of 200 at its peak, losing the status as county seat to Olivia, more centrally located in the county, in 1900. On the left side, the metal art on the receiver contains the Birch Coulee monument, county map, and Chief Wabasha. The Battle of Birch Coulee was said by historians to be the turning point of the Dakota Conflict of 1862. Under the charge of Captain Grant, soldiers, barely trained, managed to hold off attacks for 32 hours without food and water. 23 of 153 defenders lost their lives, and many were injured. The obelisks in the background are the Birch Coulee monuments, and a monument honoring six Sioux who saved the lives of whites during the uprising. In the center, the Renville County map with borders as they are today is shown, along with the existing cities, noting that Olivia is the county seat and also the corn capitol. Dakota Chief Wabasha III was the third in line of prominent chiefs of the Dakota Nation. For over one hundred years, these three chiefs acted as hereditary heads of the Mdewakanton band. Wabasha was an influential leader during the difficult times for the Dakota people. In viewing the Right side of the rifle, lasered three dimensionally in the fore-end, you will see the Morton Hotel. Redwood Falls artist Dorothea Paul, who painted this hotel, was kind enough to release this for our use. It was located next to the train depot, and was famous for miles around for its fine dining and lodging. Note also the incoming train. On the metal, the County Courthouse, built in Olivia in 1901-1902, is a building to behold. I took pictures last fall, and it is truly beautiful. The county must be commended on keeping it up so well. I believe the cost was $100,000. Renville County is also noted for minerals. The oldest rock in the world, Rainbow Gneiss, or Granite, is quarried near Morton, and has been a large part of the early and current economy of the county. You will note also, depiction of the cattle and hog industry, as well as corn being a major crop in Renville. Note also on the tang, where the rifle is minted, you will see a sugar beet.
