Description:
69 caliber, 42 inch round barrel secured by three barrel bands. Major manufacturer was Springfield Armory, producing 30,421 muskets. This example was built by D. Nippes, contract Model 1840 musket. 5,600 made, 1842 -1848. The other contractor was L. Pomeroy, producing about 6,000, 1840 -1846. Over 95% of all muskets produced were converted to percussion. Some were restored to flintlock in later years. This D. Nippes Model 1840 is a rare original flintlock, not a resoration. Lower tang is stamped - D. Nippes 1847 No. 3  20th Century Fox. In my research I found that 20th Century Fox did not keep records on their movie used firearms. In a recent an original Model 1840 Springfield sold for $6,900. The two contract muskets tend to be worth 20% less. There is minor wood repair at the breach, which is not uncommon with antique muskets. This Model 1840 Flintlock is all original including sling. Fully functional and in very good condition. Great piece of U.S. Military and movie history.
