Description:
This is an extremely difficult Colt to find if your an 1851 Navy collector, These early Navies were almost always used hard and put away wet, I have never seen a 3rd model this early this good or anywhere near it. This Colt was Manufactured in 1851 and is a 2nd year production gun, Colt started manufacturing this variation at serial number 4200, this example is #4395 and is one of the first 200 produced of basically the Navy we know today with a round guard instead of a squareback. When these were ordered, they were primarily ordered by Gold Miners and people heading out west to try to make it rich and find gold during the gold rush. I have seen quite a few (less then 10) early relic versions of this variation which collectors love because of their known history by being beloved by miners. I have owned a few of these early variations but never one this early and this nice of condition. Normally they're a relic or fair to good. I have never seen an example of this variation with finish remaining under serial number 11000. Last one I had, I purchased at the Denver show last year which was a respectable example and sold it immediately, since then, this is the first one I've had the chance to buy, I couldnt pass it up as it just is an incredible show piece of what people looking to strike it rich took with them from out east on their long trek out west. This Navy has matching serial numbers on the frame, barrel, loading lever, cylinder, trigger guard, and backstrap. I have not checked the wedge nor taken the grips off. The barrel has strong remenants of blue on the barrel. Like the early 2nd models these early variations had very muted case hardening on the frame, this example shows approximately half of the silvered muted colors. The cylinder shows an absolutely perfect cylinder scene with an easily legible "Engraved By W.L. Ormsby, New York". The backstrap and triggerguard retain a generous amount of silver finish. even the screws show original fire blue finish remaining. The grip has almost all of the original varnish. Mechanically this Colt functions excellent. This is likely the best, earliest 3rd Model 1851 Navy known as I dont believe youll ever find a better condition one within those 194 other numbers.
