Description:
FRENCH M1866 Needle-Fire CHASSEPOT Breech Loading Battle of Mentana

Very Early M1866 Chassepot Manufactured August 1867 w/ Sword Bayonet!

Here we have an antique M1866 Needle-Fire Chassepot Rifle with Sword Bayonet manufactured by D'armes de Saint-Étienne circa August 1867.

Shortly after the Austro-Prussian war, Napoleon III had requested that the next military issued rifles be needle fire. They weren’t as advanced as metallic cartridges at the time but were much more affordable overall and versatile in the field. Thus, Antoine Alphonse Chassepot came up with the M1866 Chassepot after a bit of trial and error. Production of the Chassepot began in 1867 and saw combat inside of that same year during the Battle of Mentana! Such an impact was had on the battlefield due to the M1866, it was reported to the French parliament “Les Chassepots ont fait merveille!” (The Chassepots’ have done wonderfully!) By 1868 the entire military had been re-armed with Chassepots.

The Chassepot is unique in that the it must be manually cocked before you can open the bolt. This acted as a safety feature due to the nature of the needle firing mechanics. Breech loading bolt action riles were very uncommon in the 1860s, so really, the M1866 Chassepot paved the way for its successors. Truly a unique start to the bolt action system we know and love today.

The overall condition is Good. The action is as strong as ever. The bore is dark and dusty with age. Amazingly, the military acceptance stamp remains legible on the right side of the butt stock. The sword bayonet has a few deep dings (signs of combat!) and developed a dark brown patina over the years and remains solid in construction. A wonderful example for your collection whether your interest is France, the Franco-Prussian War, or firearms technology!
