Description:
Here is a Winchester Model 1886 rifle in caliber 45-70 with lighter weight 26" round barrel and slimmer light weight fore arm, full magazine, crescent rifle butt, walnut stocks, blued finish, lever action repeater, open sights, serial # 18688, made 1888 and therefore an antique.

CONDITION:  Barrel shows 40% thinning original blue with 70% brighter blue in the protected areas by the mag tube. Mag tube shows 65% bright original blue with a higher percentage in the protected areas by the barrel. Bolt shows 90% bright original blue. Receiver, lever and hammer are the common nickelly-silver color attributed with the case hardening fading away. Action is smooth and the half cock safety functions as designed. Bore is very good with sharp rifling and minor wear. Has been test-fired for function and feed, and it works perfectly. Stocks show typical nicks and scratches, no cracks but slight loss at right upper tang where there is a dime-sized compression mark, still fit well and no extra holes, never cleaned/sanded or refinished.  This rifle was originally a 40-65 octagon according to the Cody Museum email sheet, but at some point between 1898 and 1903, it was returned to the factory and made into its present state as evidenced by 3 discoveries:  1.  With the fore arm and mag tube removed, there is a "star" stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the face of the receiver.  2. With the butt stock removed, the initials "J.P.P." are stamped on the lower left tang. James P. Parker worked in Winchester's Model room and was one of Winchester's most skilled employees - quite often, items returned for repair, refinish, or modification were assigned to him and his initials would be found either on the underside of the barrel, in the rear sight dovetail, or on the left lower tang as in this case.  3. The barrel address marking and barrel/forearm dimensions are typical of the lighter weight guns made during this time period, before the "extra lightweights" really got going. Note there is no return and repair in the records, however they were not always recorded and there are NO RETURN PROOFS so it was definitely done before February 1906 when the factory started using proof marks! In all a nice representative 1886 in the best caliber and grades NRA Antique Very Good; will make a nice shooter and collector!
