Description:
Antique AMERICAN Back Action Percussion OVER/UNDER COMBINATION Rifle/Shotgun

Great Hunting Gun for the American Frontier with “GOULCHER” Marked Lock

Here we present an antique Percussion Rifle & Shotgun Over/Under Combination Gun, manufactured circa the mid-19th Century. The advantage of having a single firearm that can fire two types of cartridges designed for rifled and smoothbore barrels is that a single gun can be used to hunt a very wide variety of game from deer to fowl and the shooter can choose the barrel appropriate for the target in seconds. These were supremely handy firearms that could also be used to defend the homestead. The lock is marked “G. GOULCHER”. George Goulcher of New York City made a wide range of components for the arms market that could be used by gunsmiths unable to produce their own parts. His primary component made would have been percussion locks.

These locks were called “back action” because the mainspring hangs behind the tumbler. The back action is often used in double rifles and occasionally in single barrel shotguns where the need for strength requires as little steel as possible be removed from the bar of the action. This lock was popular on percussion guns made in St. Louis, New York, California, Ohio, England and Belgium. Back Action percussion locks were a “late” developed style of lock. Used primarily on the hardware store line of guns, these locks did, however, show up on some better pieces in the mid-to-late 1800′s. Back Action locks are extremely fast and are often used on competition, squirrel, and light-weight boy’s rifles.

The overall condition is good. The actions function. The bore is in good shape. The lightly engraved lock reads “GOLCHER”. Here is a neat rifle/shotgun combination that can be displayed or collected!
