London Made Mid-1800s Self Defense Pocket / Muff Pistols!
Here we present a pair of antique Spencer of London Boxlock Percussion Self Defense Pistols, made circa 1850 in London, England. These little self-defense pistols would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in the busy cities of London during the mid-1800s. These pistols are small, light and simple. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the "Saturday Night Specials" of the 16th-18th century. Before the Deringer, they were "Gentleman's" or "Muff Pistols", typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff.
The overall condition is good. The action functions properly on both pistols. The bores are good. The grips are in good shape but are seated loosely against the frame. Both pistols are marked "Spencer" and "London" on the locks, with the initial, "IT", on the thumb plates. There are British proofs on the bottoms of the barrels. These come with a hardwood case that holds both pistols, some caps, and a few lead balls. Here is a fantastic cased pair of boxlock pistol to collect and display!
