The lever-action Savage Model 99 is considered by most collectors and firearms enthusiasts to be the finest rifle that Savage ever built. At a bare minimum it certainly is the most famous and recognizable of the firm's offerings over the years. The Savage company took great pride in using the finest materials available to construct the Model 99, and the gunsmiths that assembled them paid a lot of attention to fit and finish. The result was a very reliable and well-made rifle that quickly earned a reputation for both classy looking and very accurate. Over the years between 1899 and the end of production in 1997 there were a number of different models offered as well as calibers, from standard "plain jane" guns to elaborately engraved presentation and limited edition models. This is a scarcely seen Model 99 "E" that was made in the early 1970's. It is chambered in one of the most popular cartridges, the .308 Winchester. The Model 99E was brought out first in the mid 1920's until the mid 1930's; this is NOT one of those. This is the second offering of the 99E and features a factory high polish blue finish and a hardwood stock set. It has a 20" inch barrel with factory iron sights and a factory drilled and tapped receiver for optics. The bore is excellent with strong rifling. The butt stock has a crack in the wrist that has been professionally repaired. This rifle functions perfectly and would be a wonderful hunting rifle for years to come.
