Description:
Fine Early CW Colt 1849 Pocket with Superb Cylinder Scene. This specimen has all the earmarks of use during the Civil War, made in early 1861. SN 192436 the revolver is ALL MATCHING on barrel, trigger guard and grip strap, on loading lever and wedge and most importantly inside the grips which has original inked-in serial number. Only on the under side of frame where it meets barrel showing that serial number is there only a very scant remnant of the serial number which can be made out. Judging from the condition of the rest of the gun we can assume that it was done in use. However the cylinder pin serial number does not match. First of all the “New York” barrel address is sharp and clear as are the other markings. The barrel retains a goodly amount of original blue with most mixing and turning to a grey patina. The cylinder scene (the stagecoach and robber) roll engraving is one of the sharpest and clear scenes as we have seen in a long while. The backstrap and trigger guard retain the large majority of silver plate over the brass. The grips are sound with just a very slight chip in the base on one side but no cracks and retains the majority of original varnish. . Although the cylinder scene is sharp there are a number of small dents in it undoubtedly from period use in using the revolver as a “tack hammer”. This may also explain the scraping of the frame just ahead of the underside trigger guard-perhaps to pry something off out in the field where nothing else was available to do so. All in all, an extremely nice Civil War Era Colt that has great collectibility. Thanks for looking.
