Description:

SCARCE WAR of 1812 JENKS US M1808 FLINTLOCK Musket

Musket Made in Providence, Rhode Island, Dated 1813

Here we present an antique Steven Jenks and Sons Flintlock Musket, manufactured in 1813 in Providence, Rhode Island. Steven Jenks was one of 19 gunmakers contracted to manufacture the Model 1808. Jenks manufactured approximately 3,925 Harpers Ferry Pattern Model 1808 Contract Muskets. These were made for state and federal troops during the War of 1812, an extension of the Napoleonic Wars that reached American shores, a conflict in which the British sacked Washington D.C. and burned down the White House. The war was fought all over the young United States—from the Great Lakes and Canada all the way to Florida—and involved both Native Americans and Canadians in addition to Americans and British.

The lock is marked "JENKS & S./RI/1813" at the rear and the eagle with laurel leaf over "U.S." located in front of the hammer. The top of the barrel at the breech is marked "1247" and there is an oval proof next to the number. There is a bayonet lug mounted on the underside of the barrel.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have an even gray patina. The markings are clear. The stock is in great shape. The bore is in very good condition. The action is strong. Here is a really stunning musket that would have been there during the War of 1812 from a well-known maker and hard to find contract!
