Description:
This ITHACA M1911 A1 was manufactured in 1944 and retains its original parts and finish.  It has not been re-worked or re-finished, all parts and finish are factory original. It has the correct Flannery barrel. The bore is excellent and there is very little evidence of use.  Notice that the barrel has little wear from rubbing on the bushing during firing. The inspectors FJA and both P marks are clear and prominent.  The ordnance wheel is stamped on a slight angle as usual but clear on the right frame at the rear.  Minimal front strap wear, suggesting low usage.  The majority of wear on the pistol is on the slide consistent with holster rubbing. It has the correct sub-contractor’s “L” marked Mag.
Astute observers will notice that a Wide Spur, Colt style hammer, is used.  Clawson references this unique assembly, Page 307 & 340. Colt hammers were supplied in small quantities in March 1943. Ithaca was having a startup quality problem and problems with interchangeability and so Colt supplied some hammers. Some were intentionally used and the rest likely dumped into a parts bin, after all, hammers is hammers. Without First In First Out they got picked randomly.
The pistol has original finish, uniform patina wear, on everything.  Why would only the hammer be changed unless you are building a target pistol, this one is clearly not.   More importantly it came from a family, not out of a collector stash.
I believe it is reasonable to assume the Colt hammer is original to this pistol, and it makes it a rare variation.  If you disagree you can install a traditional Ithaca Hammer for little cost. I believe that would be a big mistake.
This pistol is in excellent original condition considering its service use.  It will make an excellent addition to a WWII collection.  .45 ACP Cal. with a 5 ½” Barrel.  Serial Number: 1 847 839 FFL Required.
