Description:
This is something we have never seen before and we have owned over 50 of these Colt Derringers at one time or another - even one of the sterling silver ones which are quite rare, but this beats all we have seen. I do not know if this is a conversion by Thuer, the Colt factory, or possibly by some un-named experienced gunsmith, but the hammer has 2 simultaneous firing pins - one center fire and one rim fire, and it can shoot either round without adjustment or change. See the last 2 photos - one of the hammer when cocked and one of the breechface with the hammer in the fired position. In researching this we find there was a .41 Extra Short Centerfire cartridge that was available during the time frame and no doubt this was the centerfire round that this derringer was capable of firing, in addition to the standard .41 Rimfire cartridge. To shoot either round requires no change to the pistol or hammer. Totally unique and a rarity no doubt. While we wish the condition of the derringer was a bit better we cannot stress the rarity of this particular conversion. It would be interesting to see if this type of conversion has ever been attempted on other derringers or even revolvers with various rim and center fire cartridges of the same caliber?
