Description:
BAYARD by HENRY PIEPER Double Barrel Side by Side HAMMERLESS SHOTGUN C&R

Nice Turn of the Century Bird Gun!

Here we present a Bayard Henri Pieper Double Barrel Side by Side Shotgun, made at the turn of the 20th Century in Belgium. Henri Pieper was a German born gunmaker in Belgium. He began in Liege in 1866 under the business name “Anciens Etablissements Pieper”. The rapid growth of his early business was party due to an excellent decision to purchase a barrel factory in Nessonvaux. Some of Remington’s finest double shotguns of the time have the maker’s mark of “HP” on them from this factory.

Pieper sometimes used the trade name Bayard, the name of the magical, talking war horse belonging to Renaud de Montauban in 12th Century French lore. Charlemagne attempts to take revenge on the horse and its former owner by tying a large stone to the horse before trying to drown the steed. But, the horse being magical, it broke the stone and escaped. The tales of Bayard were well-known over Europe and ties into Belgium in that the town of Dinant has a rock formation with a cleft in it that they call Bayard Rock after the legend.

The overall condition is Fine. The action is strong. The bores are very bright. Modest engravings are found on the locks. A Bayard trade stamp is found on the barrel rib. A mighty fine shotgun indeed!
