Description:
General Specs: Lefever, Year 1901, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 8oz, Chokes IC/IM, LOP 14 1/8", DAH 2 5/8", DAC 1 9/16"
Serial Number: 38346

Lefever Arms Co. of Syracuse, N.Y. produced innovative shotguns, some of the best of the American trade, from the 1880’s until the sale of the company to Ithaca Gun Co. in 1916.  Ithaca assembled a few more Lefever patent shotguns through 1919 and then there were no more.  The most unusual variation is the “ball and socket” joint that mates the barrels to the frame.  Most all other gun makers utilized the more familiar hinge pin in the action and the hook on the barrels to achieve joining of barrels to action.  The ball and socket joint allows the user of the gun, through the simple turning of a large screw, to tighten the barrels to the standing breech of the gun should the gun ever develop any “looseness”.  It is brilliant and simple.  This fine Lefever FE Grade, sn38346 built in 1901, is in splendid factory original condition, unaltered over its 118 years of existence, still retaining 65% bold case colors on the action and about 85% Damascus pattern on the barrels.  The F Grade is the first in the Lefever line up to be adorned with game scene engraving, and this gun shows the talent of the master engraver Joseph Loy.  The scroll work is superb, and the game birds are delicately detailed and realistic.  The action is mechanically excellent, with perfect screws, and the barrels are tight as new on the ball joint and breech face. The 30” Damascus barrels are in superb condition, with no dents or dings, excellent shiny bores with only a few very light frost marks,  tight ribs, choked IC/IM, and a minimum barrel wall thickness of 36 thousandths on both barrels.  These are excellent barrels safe to shoot modern loads to 1 1/8 ounce and around 1250 fps.  There are none better than the RST shells we use, as they pattern beautifully and are loaded to low pressures for shooting vintage shotguns (RSTSHELLS).  We regularly hunt and shoot vintage clays with healthy Damascus guns and we do not hesitate to recommend them for avid shooters, but not with heavy field loads.  The English walnut stock is nicely figured, original to the gun, and has great modern shooting dimensions of 14 1/8” x 2 5/8” x 1 9/16” to the original butt plate, and no cracks or repairs.  The gun is choked as the perfect upland gun for pheasants and other quarry.  With RST Spreader loads and their normal loads it is extremely versatile for close work and long birds.  At 7 1/2lbs. and balanced perfectly 3/16” ahead of the ball joint, she is as lively as she is lovely.  This is a very attractive Lefever for a very affordable price.  Very few F Grades were produced with ejectors as this one has, and this gun has that perfect aged look that purists really enjoy.  We priced her to sell, so don’t miss out on this fine gun.  Thanks for looking!
