Description:
#4984 Colt S/A 7-1/2”x45COLT, U.S. Cavalry, 138XXX (1894), issued and inspected by Rinaldo A. Carr (RAC). Very good tight action with the hammer having all the “clicks” intact and a positive lock-up. The bore looks to be about an 8+ on a scale of 10 and has no pitting; just light dirt, dust, and probably some powder residue. The exterior is fine sharp metal with no rounded edges or weak markings and it has a smooth overall aged brown patina and showing a thin cloudy faded grey C/H on the hammer. It has the correct style ejector housing with the half-moon ejector head, which I believe is correct on these very late Cavalry Colts. The grips are VG++ with just light wear (or cleaning) and have the readable “RAC” stamp on the bottom, but no cartouches on the sides. Therefore they look to possibly be the correct arsenal replacement grips to this revolver and having been done sometime during its service since they do not have the side cartouches. With so many of these desirable Colt Single Actions having had some degree of up-gradings, restorations and/or cosmetic enhancements, and especially the Cavalry models, I am always reluctant to say ANY Colt S/A is a “pure-as-the-driven-snow” piece. In most cases it often seems that something has been done to these highly sought after Cavalry models during their lifetime .and hile I am certainly no expert, this gun does look right to me. But that is only my opinion. The only question is the possibility of the cylinder serial number looking very crisp and the same with the “U.S.” frame stamping. This revolver should therefore be considered as possibly being a restored gun to some minor degree and is being priced as such, even though I cannot pick a rock-solid reason for even saying this. It is a decent, martially marked revolver and inspected by the last inspector and issued during the ending period of Indian conflicts. For the mid-range collector who can accept the possibly of a restored gun, it is a good and rare opportunity to acquire a very desirable Cavalry Single Action at a fraction of what these usually are priced. There are lots of pictures of this neat old gun, so if they all do not load up, be sure to e-mail me and I’ll forward them along to you. About VG+ as described. $4795
