Description:
These two early .44 Army Models, number 22809 and number 17708, were both made in 1861, and both have seen  hard use.  While not purchased directly by the U.S. gomvernment, they both probably saw service during the Civil War.  They are both four screw models, and could be used with a shoulder stock.  They each have a small "O" beneath the serial numbers, which indicated they did not pass U.S. government inspection, and were sold to the retail trade, after having the problem part or parts replaced or repaired.  Most were then bought by one of several large wholesalers, such as B. Kittredge, J.C. Grubb or Emerson Gaylord, and because of the demand caused by the war, were then sold to the government at a slightly discounted price.  Per Charles Pate, in his book "The Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver", "Colt repaired arms that could not meet the government standard but could be made serviceable and then sold them commercially after stamping "44 CAL" and an "O" on their trigger guards.  Ironically, many of them were subsequently purchased by or for the Union Army".  The case and shoulder stock with these two guns are modern reproductions, but the guns and the one-piece ivory grips are genuine, as is the powder flask.  Together, they make an attractive display, and are historically significant to the Civil War student.                                        PRICE:   $4,950              We are Antique & Modern Firearms in Lexington, KY, dealer of fine firearms since 1974.                    PH. 859-276-1419         We Buy, Sell and Trade Firearms & Knives.    Have a Individual FirearmFirearms Collection, or Firearms Estate to sell, let us know, we can buy or consignment sell it for you.                   NOTE:  No additional fee for a Credit Card payment.
