Mid-1800s POSEY COUNTY, INDIANA MADE Long Rifle!
Here we present an antique Charles Pretzsch Half Stock American Long Rifle, made circa 1850 in New Harmony, Indiana. Charles Pretzsch was a gunsmith in the town of New Harmony. This rifle would have made a very nice target or small game rifle. Its bore is a fairly small .32 caliber, with an average length 38-1/4-inch octagon barrel. I’m guessing many a squirrel has been taken by this rifle, but still sturdy enough to fend of attackers at the homeplace.
Charles Pretzsch also owned a Hardware shop, along with a drug store, the Lyric Theatorium. In the book “Images of America New Harmony Indiana”, by Weinzapfel, Bigham & Branigin, its stated that a large fire broke out August 17, 1908 in the town. Many local residences and businesses perished, but somehow Pretzsch’s buildings all survived and were left standing. It was only a few years later that Charles passed away, in 1915.
The overall condition is good+. The action is strong. The bore is semi-bright. The stock is solid and remains in good shape. “RIDDLE” is engraved on the lock. “CHARLES PRETZSON/N. HARMONY IND” can be read atop the barrel. Here is a superb Indiana rifle to collect and display!
