Description:
RARE Antique DERINGER U.S. NAVY Model 1842 Pistol

1 of only 200 Rifled Box Lock Pistols Accepted by the Navy

Here we present an antique Henry Deringer U.S. Navy Contract Model 1842 “Box Lock” Pistol, in .54 caliber, made circa 1842 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Approximately 1,200 of these pistols were manufactured by famed Philadelphia gunmaker Henry Deringer for the U.S. Navy. Of those, as few as around 200-300 may have been accepted by the Navy. This variation is the first U.S. martial pistol to feature rifled barrels.
Most of these scarce pistols saw service through the American Civil War. This one was made just prior to the Mexican-American War. Unlike most martial pistols of its time, the hammer is mounted on the interior of the lock plate. It also features a captive ramrod on a swivel to avoid loss in the sea during boarding maneuvers.

The lock is marked “US / DERINGER / PHILADELA”. The barrel is marked “RP”, for inspector Richard Paine.

The overall condition is fine. This pistol has been expertly refinished. The case colors remain visible. The barrel is bright. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is in very nice condition. The bore is clean and sharp. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a rare example of a Henry Deringer contract pistol for the Navy that is hard to find in any condition!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 6 inches.

Caliber: .54 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
