“P.R.C.” Marked BURNSIDE-SPENCER 1865 Carbine
VERY NICE Civil War/Frontier Saddle Ring Carbine!
Here we present an antique Burnside Contract Spencer Model 1865 Carbine, made circa 1865 by contract by the Burnside Rifle Company in Providence, Rhode Island. The Spencer was a very successful carbine that was desirable on Civil War battlefields due to its handy size, accuracy, and rate of fire. The magazine tube in the butt holds 7 shots and a captured Confederate soldier is quoted as saying that you “load in the morning and fire all day!” The inventor, Christian Spencer, had the unique opportunity to personally instruct President Abraham Lincoln as he test-fired the rifle, resulting in more military sales.
This specimen is one of the Burnside Contract, making it scarcer than those made by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company. Out of the 34,000 made by Burnside, over 30,000 were purchased by the U.S. government. The top of the frame is marked “SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860/MANUF’D AT PROV. R.I./BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO.” and “Model 1865”.
This one bears a clear inspector cartouche on the left side of the butt stock: “LCA” for Lucian C. Allin. There is an old marking on the left side of the forestock. The initials “P.R.C.” can be observed throughout the carbine in multiple places, suggesting that it may have seen use in a non-military role after it was taken out of the government inventory. It is not at all implausible that this may have been used by an express company, railroad, or some other business that armed its people.
The overall condition is fine. 75% of the original blue finish remains. Silvered case colors are visible throughout, with some still vibrant on the breech block. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The walnut stock shows a clear cartouche and the other marking. It remains smooth and solid with some handling marks. The bore is in good condition with nice rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a superior example of a Burnside Spencer with some neat markings!
