Description:
Serial #1923, .50 RF, 30" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is one of 5,000 Triplett & Scott “carbines" ordered by the state of Kentucky in order to arm its Home Guard troops, mustered into service in order to protect the supply lines of Sherman’s advance during the Atlanta campaign. They were built in two barrel lengths: 22" true carbines, and 30" rifle-length carbines, with a breakdown of 2,000 and 3,000 examples respectively. This is one of the long-barreled carbines and retains 92-95% of the original blue finish on the barrel, and the “KENTUCKY" stamp on the left side of the breech is crisp and clear. The frame has an overall mottled gray-brown patina with hints of original color case-hardening in protected areas. The walnut forend has some minor hand, ing marks and minor blemishes, while the buttstock as the same, as well as the very common longitudinal crack on the left side of the wrist corresponding to the offset magazine tube. The “N / WB" inspector stamps on the left side of the buttstock near the heel are crisp and clear. The action is fully functional, and the barrel lock-up is firm with a minimal amount of play. These guns were built by Charles Parker’s Meriden Manufacturing Co. as his second venture into the firearms field, prior to founding the most famous American shotgun company of all time. This is a fine example of a rare American military arm, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. Antique
