Description:
Serial #G771 / 13076, .303 British, 30 1/4" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a simply splendid looking, BSA-made rifle that has retained 80-85% of the original bright commercial blue that has faded slightly at the muzzle, in a single area along the left side of the receiver, as well as along the exposed edges and projections. The rifle was originally fitted with a Metford barrel, but it was swapped with an “E (in circle)" marked Enfield-rifled barrel at some point in its career, and has extensive Birmingham nitro proofs on the barrel beneath the slightly cracked handguard. The rifle is fully equipped with bayonet lug, “RIGBY PATENT" nosecap, safety, and complete set of volley sights, and the dust cover is engraved with the retailer’s name: “Wm POWELL & SON CARRS LANE / BIRMINGHAM". The english walnut buttstock, forend, and handguard have small handling marks and minor surface blemishes scattered about the reapplied commercial varnish. A period leather sling in excellent condition is installed. Despite their obsolescence in government service, Metford-rifled commercial rifles were made well into the first decade of the 20th century due to their popularity with competition and target shooters, and examples of these rifles one will still be found in post 1900 B.S.A. catalogs. Once cordite began to take over target shooting, however, many were converted to Enfield rifling, like this example.. FFL or C&R
