Description:
This is a tailor-made khaki tunic having the “UBIQUE" flaming bomb insignia and embossed cannon buttons for the Royal Artillery Regiment. The epaulettes have the crown and double rank pips of a full Colonel, and embroidered overseas service chevrons are present on the right sleeve. Five award ribbons in two rows are sewn above the left breast pocket: Distinguished Service Order, India Medal, Queen’s South Africa Medal / King’s South Africa Medal, 1914 Mons Star (with rosette), British War Medal, and the Great War Victory Medal (with oak leaf denoting recipient was mentioned in dispatches). The fabric is in excellent condition with just a couple of tiny spots of insect damage on the front just below the lapel. The regimental buttons are complete and have some mild tarnish but are otherwise still fairly bright and the interior khaki lining is clean and intact. The maker’s label is fully legible at the collar: “J. DANIELS & Co. / 1 ARTILLERY PLACE WOOLWICH / & 34 BURY ST. ST. JAMES’ S.W.", and has the owner’s name handwritten in ink as well: “Col. P.T.C. Herbert RHA". The riding breeches that accompany the tunic are heavy twill and are in fine condition, save for some small red and black stains dotting the cloth. The breeches were made by a colonial tailor who operated in India and Egypt. The maker’s label is clear and intact: “NAWAB DIN & BROs. / BRUCE ROAD, QUETTA / & SIDIGABER, ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT", however the handwritten details have faded to illegibility. Percy Thomas Colthurst Herbert was born in Killarney in 1868. He attended Malvern College and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1888. He took part in the Tirah and Bazaar Valley expeditions, where he was first mentioned in dispatches, and was both an adjutant to a field artillery brigade, and commander of “R" Battery RHA, 3rd Cavalry Brigade. He retired in 1902, and became a reserve officer in the Royal Horse Artillery. He rejoined the Army at the outbreak of the First World War, and took the 1st Battery of Anti-Aircraft guns to France in the autumn of 1914. In 1915 he was promoted to Lt. Colonel, and given command of the Meerut Division Ammunition Column in Mesopotamia, where he was again mentioned in dispatches, and won the DSO. He was appointed “adviser in horse mastership" to X Corps, BEF in 1917, then Chief Inspector and second-in-command of the British Remount Commission in Montreal in 1918. This is a great example of an identified, Great War British officer's service uniform, and is in fine condition overall.
