Payment Types Accepted: Money Order, Certified Check Description: Nice early Brass Double Cavity Bullet Mold for the .31 Caliber Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver as well as the Model 1855 Root Revolver. This one dates to the early 1850's as it has no sprue cutter, small sprue funnel and produces a single heeled (grease groove) conical bullet as well as round balls. Top is marked with a GREAT "COLT'S PATENT" with a small letter P on the top just over the right handle. These markings are fantastic and not worn like so many you find after 165 years. Good+ Condition Overall with Very Good Cavities, the usual nicks and scratches on the outside, According to Robin Rapley, the grease groove facilitated the conical projectile to be loaded into the revolver's cylinder. It's a straight-legged mold with no sprue cutter which is nice because it will fit in most any wooden case that has a mold compartment. This mold is identified in Robin Rapley's book on Colt Accoutrements on Page 124 as Mold # M17. These molds were extremely popular accessories with Civilians, California Gold Miners, and both Confederate and Union Soldiers during the Civil War. Thanks to Robin Rapley, we can identify this one as one of the earlier types as the later ones had sprue cutters and went from brass bodies to steel. See Photo. Mr. Rapley was the first and only author I know to tackle the vast array of Colt Accoutrements from the Paterson Revolving Rifle all the way to the Colt 1911 with a book solely dedicated to the subject. Years ago, one could see him at various shows like Tulsa, Baltimore, and Louisville and he was always very approachable, friendly, and willing to share his vast knowledge with anyone who stopped by. He will be missed, especially that Kiwi (New Zealand) accent of his! If you're a collector of early Colts, I would highly encourage you to pick up a copy of his book as it contains a wealth of great information. Over the past 13 years, this book has become an indispensible part of my gun library. SOLD |
