Description:
Antique T. Ketland & Co., London, Flintlock Pistol, approx. .58 cal., pinned 7.5” heavy octagonal brass barrel is marked “London” on top flat ahead of an oval “ELG” (Liége, Belgium) proofmark, and what appear to be “crossed swords” impressed proofmarks at left breech; flat lockplate with a projecting rear teat is marked “T / Ketland” in a semi-circle above “& Co.” ahead of the flint cock, and engraved with a simple flower behind; brass mountings include trigger guard, oval buttcap, front tang, sideplate, and 2 fluted ferrules retaining the plain hardwood ramrod; European walnut fullstock has raised aprons on either side of lock, and a diamond-shaped metal wrist inlay having what looks like a small stamped "(eagles head)" above an impressed cartouche of a "(seated lion) over “EB.”

Condition is about good overall.  The brass barrel is predominantly smooth with clear markings, and parts of the brass have a dark age patina; iron lockplate and its component parts have a dark age patina, light erosion, scattered staining, clear markings, and appear to be in original flintlock configuration.  Stock is sound with a line crack at wrist below lockplate, another at front, as well as in front of the trigger guard, with minor losses, wear and marks associated with great age and use.  Front trigger guard tang is cracked with a misshapen trigger guard loop; original rear tang broke off and has been replaced.  Action is strong and smooth; smoothbore is clean.
