FAYETTE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA Long Rifle by JOHN CROSSLAND Antique .41 Cal
With Gorgeous Full-Length Striped Maple Stock!
Here we present an antique Pennsylvania Long Rifle by John Crossland, made circa the 1840s in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. John Crossland was born circa 1816 of German stock. His father was Elijah Crossland, born in Lancaster County—the cradle of American gun making—in 1782. Elijah would pass in 1860 in Fayette County where the family had moved. Back to John Crossland: his shop was near the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Main Street in Uniontown. Records note that John was a longtime member of the local militia’s artillery unit nicknamed the “Fayette Blues”. He also was a drummer for nearly 6 decades and was still turning heads when he drummed into Falls City with his band in 1878, according to the Fayette County Republican. He would pass in 1890, aged 74.
This “rifle” is smoothbored with open rifle sights. This is a very handy rifle: relatively light and not too long. It has a 33 inch octagonal barrel in .41 caliber, a great all around size that would take medium game or protect the homestead. Probably many rifles like this were used in the early days of the Civil War as well. It features a full-length, striped maple stock with brass hardware. Double set triggers. The top flat of the barrel is marked “J.M. CROSSLAND” about midway between the breech and the rear sight. This musician/artilleryman/gunsmith was known for the quality of his work and it shows here.
The overall condition is very good or better. The stock is in great shape. The bore is smooth and in nice shape. The action is strong and crisp. An excellent piece of Fayette County & general American history that can be yours to preserve for the next generation!
